The Monster Called “Overwhelmed”

It’s Supposed to Be “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” Right?

Well… maybe.
But more often than not, it’s the most overwhelming time of the year.

This year—yes, this year—let’s not get swallowed by the monster called Overwhelmed.

Let’s decide that “NO” is a word we use freely… and joyfully.

The “NO” List

NO to Perfection

I am not perfect. I will never be perfect.
My house will not sparkle like a magazine spread.
My meals will not be curated like a chef’s tasting menu.
My gifts will not look like they were wrapped by Santa’s top elf.
I will do the best I can with what I have—and be perfectly happy with my imperfection.

NO to Worrying About What People Think

People are going to think people things.
Most of the time, folks are too wrapped up in their own lives to notice ours.

Do they think I look hideous without makeup?
Nope.

Do they think I'm odd for cleaning my bathroom every day (imperfectly, mind you)?
Nope.

Do they think I should do life the way they do?
Nope.

The people who love me, love me unconditionally.
They don’t judge me for being me.

NO to Overspending on Christmas Gifts

The people I buy for can get what they want or need on their own.

So this year?
I’m choosing thrift-store treasures, Etsy finds, or homemade gifts crafted with heart.
Meaningful > Mass-produced.

NO to “Saving the Good Stuff”

I’m lighting the candles.
I’m using the good china on a random Tuesday.
I’m wearing the new dress for no reason at all.
I’m putting on red lipstick just because.

Everyday life is the special occasion.

NO to Hiding My Guilty Pleasures

I’m not hiding that I binge-watch Outlander.
I’m not hiding that I take long naps.
I’m not hiding that TikTok scrolling can turn into a full-time job.

These things bring joy and comfort—and joy is never something to hide.

A Poster for My Desk

I want a big, bold reminder that says:

NO IS GOOD!

Because sometimes “NO” is self-care.
Boundary-setting.
Freedom.

But YES… YES Is on the Table Too

This list may open a can of overwhelmed worms—but I’ll deal with the squirmy things when they show up.

YES to stepping outside my comfort zone.

YES to making my health a real priority.

YES to learning something new every day.

YES to helping others however I can.

YES to travel and adventure—even solo.

YES to joy, happiness, and living my best life.

Naming the Monster Makes It Smaller

I just noticed something…

By writing down what overwhelms me, I feel lighter.
Calmer.
More in control.

The monster isn’t so scary when you call it by name.
Now I can face it—and do something about it.

Blessings,

Bethanne
